Pan Pacific International Holdings (PPIH) has introduced a new employee benefits program that subsidizes oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing) for female employees, marking a notable development in corporate-led reproductive healthcare support in Japan.
Under the program, PPIH fully covers the monthly storage fee for frozen eggs—typically JPY 5,500 per month—and provides reimbursement of egg retrieval costs of up to JPY 400,000 for managerial employees. Eligibility extends to approximately 1,700 full-time and contract employees under the age of 40, representing roughly 60% of the company’s female workforce.
By enabling employees to better decouple reproductive timing from immediate career decisions, PPIH aims to support long-term career development while strengthening its ability to attract and retain high-performing talent. The program is operated in collaboration with CellSource, a regenerative medicine company, further reinforcing cross-industry partnerships in the reproductive medicine and life sciences sectors.
An internal survey conducted by PPIH revealed that 25% of female employees have either previously undergone egg freezing or expressed interest in doing so, highlighting substantial latent demand. While similar initiatives have been introduced by companies such as Unicharm, FamilyMart, and Mercari, PPIH’s decision to fully subsidize monthly storage fees on an ongoing basis remains relatively rare in the Japanese market.
In parallel, PPIH also provides financial support for low-dose oral contraceptives aimed at alleviating menstrual pain, positioning comprehensive women’s healthcare support as a core component of its corporate strategy. Given the company’s predominantly female customer base, investments in employee health are expected to generate positive spillover effects in product development, store operations, and customer engagement.
As workforce values evolve and Japan’s declining birthrate continues to pose macroeconomic challenges, corporate-led fertility support initiatives are gaining increasing attention as both a talent strategy and a private-sector response to structural demographic risk.
NPMI Perspective
NPMI views PPIH’s egg freezing subsidy as strategically significant, as it directly addresses the structural constraint whereby reproductive timing is often subordinated to career progression. By reducing the financial burden associated with oocyte cryopreservation, the program helps mitigate inequality in future pregnancy opportunities and lowers barriers to access for social egg freezing.
More broadly, expanded utilization of egg freezing has the potential to stimulate growth across the assisted reproductive technology (ART) ecosystem, positioning corporate-sponsored fertility benefits as a catalyst for sector-wide development rather than a standalone HR initiative.

【Key Term: Oocyte Cryopreservation】
Oocyte cryopreservation is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) in which a woman’s eggs are retrieved and preserved at ultra-low temperatures for long-term storage. Because both the quantity and quality of oocytes decline with age, freezing eggs at a younger age can improve the probability of successful pregnancy in the future.
Historically, adoption has been constrained by high upfront medical costs associated with egg retrieval, as well as ongoing storage fees. Corporate subsidies reduce these economic barriers, expanding reproductive choice while also attracting attention as a private-sector approach to addressing the broader societal challenge of declining fertility rates.
